RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — May 7, 2024 marks a year before travelers are required to have a REAL ID, with officials urging Virginians planning to board a domestic flight to get their REAL ID before the deadline.

The Department of Motor Vehicles, Transportation Security Administration and Richmond International Airport will host a news conference on Thursday, May 2 to share information and answer questions about REAL ID’s ahead of the May, 7, 2025 enforcement deadline at American airports.

The REAL ID press conference will take place at 9 a.m. Thursday in the South Conference Room at the Richmond International Airport.

Beginning May 7, 2025, Virginians who want to board a domestic flight will need to have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or ID, or another federally accepted form of identification such as a U.S. passport, passport card or military ID.

According to a spokesperson for the DMV, REAL ID regulations also apply to military bases and secure federal facilities, with some military bases already requiring REAL ID or another federally accepted ID for entry.
