PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Task Force 2 Urban Search and Rescue Team has ramped up support efforts ahead of Hurricane Milton.

Early Monday morning, 17 additional members of VA-TF2 will deploy to Atlanta, Georgia in response to Milton. The crew is expected to arrive in Atlanta by Monday afternoon.

Six members of the Red Incident Support Team (IST) were already activated and deployed to Atlanta Sunday morning. Both groups will rendezvous with FEMA IST in Atlanta in preparation to possibly move into Florida and assist local agencies.

The following resources have been activated to support the response to Hurricane Milton:

  • 1 NIMS Type 1 US&R Task Force: Washington TF-1
  • 3 NIMS Type 3 US&R Task Forces: California TF-1, California TF-2 & California TF-3 and
  • 1 Mission Ready Package Water Rescue from from Virginia TF-2

On Sunday, the National Hurricane Center announced that Milton has become a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico during its 2. p.m. ET update.
