PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – The annual Virginia sales tax holiday returns to its typical spot on the August calendar this year.

Virginia’s 3-day sales tax holiday is from 12:01 a.m. on August 2 until 11:59 p.m. on August 4.

During the sales tax holiday, the following items are tax-free: qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products. It’s a great opportunity to save on items you already plan to buy.

The holiday weekend almost didn’t happen last year. It was set to expire on July 1, 2023 and lawmakers forgot to propose an extension during the General Assembly, but it was later added back in an amended state budget agreement. Because of the delay, the holiday was pushed back to late October for 2023.
