RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — We are just days away from primary day in Virginia where voters will cast their ballots in key races, including the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate, and several other key congressional races.
Hanover County General Registrar Teri Smithson said if you want to cast your ballot, you’ll need to bring an ID like a passport or a driver’s license.
“If they have a chance, they can check their voter registration by going online at elections.virginia.gov. There, you can put in your information, you can find your voting history, and find where your polling place is,” Smithson told 8News.
Polls will be open across Virginia from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18. You can also vote early at your local registrar’s office through Saturday.
“Either 8 to 4 or 9 to 5, here in Hanover County, we will be here from 9 to 5 on Saturday. That’s your last chance to vote absentee,” Smithson said.
Plus, if the primary snuck up on you, no worries. Smithson said you can register to vote when you go to cast your ballot.
“If you are new to Virginia, if you show up to the polls on Election Day, and you are not registered, you can absolutely do a same-day registration, just make sure you follow your neighbor to the polling place because you have to register in the precinct in which you would be registered,” Smithson said.
It’s important to keep in mind that, because Virginia doesn’t require you to register with a political party, voters can choose to cast their ballot in either a Republican or Democratic primary, but not both.
