WILLIAMSBURG (WAVY) – A new era of William and Mary basketball began on Wednesday inside Kaplan Arena. Dane Fischer stepped up and was introduced as the 31st head men’s basketball coach in school history.

“This program is in a really good spot, and I want to take it to a great spot,” said Fischer, who steps in after four years as the top assistant coach at George Mason University.

Fischer, 39, is a head coach for the first time in his career, after stops at Rider and Bucknell before George Mason, and knows what it means to play in the postseason. He’s been a part of three NCAA Tournament teams, two teams who advanced to the National Invitational Tournament, and his first coaching stop- Williams College- advanced all the way to the Division III National Championship game.

“I knew very quickly DAne had the stuff we needed,” said William and Mary Athletics Director Samantha Huge.
