WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) — A Williamsburg police officer was released from the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail on a $10,000 unsecured personal recognizance bond on Friday.
Richard Drab, Jr., a 20-year veteran with the Williamsburg Police Department, surrendered to James City County police around 7:10 p.m. at his home on Wednesday after a two-hour long barricade situation.
According to James City County police, they were called to the home for an incident described as a domestic dispute. Drab allegedly fire an AR-15 rifle on time inside the home, but no injuries were reported.
Drab was charged with shooting within an occupied dwelling, domestic assault and brandishing and reckless handling of a firearm. According to James City County police, six weapons were seized from the home.
Williamsburg Police Department Chief Sean Dunn says Drab was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
“I want to thank the James City County Police Department for their prompt and professional handling of this situation which fortunately led to a peaceful resolution,” said Dunn in a statement.
Drab’s wife, who was in court on Friday, told officers that he was intoxicated and carrying around a firearm. Court documents say he raised the gun at her, she left the room and later heard it go off.
According to court documents, there are some conditions to Drab’s bond release. He is not allowed to possess or transport any firearms and he can’t reside at the house where the incident happened.
Drab will be going to Edgehill Recovery and Retreat to do a post-program rehabilitation and will be monitored by Colonial Community Corrections. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 11, 2019.
