NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Every day, Synedra Brumfield thinks about her only son Denzel Labiche, who was killed last year.

“It’s hard to describe because I feel like I’m standing still even though I’m still moving, and my family were still trying move on with our lives, even though losing my son was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced,” said Brumfield.

On May 29, 2017, police were called to Cox Landing Drive, where they found Labiche with a gunshot wound. He died shortly after.

10 On Your Side reported in June that Shanon Hodges was wanted in connection with his death.

Since then, Hodges was brought from Hawaii back to Newport News and is charged with second-degree murder, abduction, discharging a firearm in an occupied building and using a firearm in a felony.

“I really wanted justice to be served quicker than it’s been, but I can only hope that moving forward the ball will get rolling and we’ll have justice for my son,” Brumfield said.

She says Hodges was married to her son. They had only been married for less than a year.

Brumfield says even though she’s out of state, if anything major happens in her son’s case she will be here.

“We will be there as soon as the trial is set, my family will be there front row. I need to see the person who took my son away from me, my only son,” Brumfield said.
