CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Heavy traffic and road closures are expected Friday in the Hickory area of Chesapeake as former President Donald Trump is expected to hold a rally for his 2024 campaign Friday afternoon.
Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is scheduled to speak at 3 p.m. at Historic Greenbrier Farms.
An estimated 10,000 people could attend, according to Chesapeake City Manager Chris Price in an email sent to City Council Wednesday. The city is providing traffic and public safety assistance, even though the event is private.
“Please share with your friends and neighbors that traffic on Friday will be challenging,” Price said. “Many roads may be congested, with some short-term closures being necessary for safety and security.”
Sign Pine Road, which the venue sits on, will be closed to all but local traffic beginning at 8 a.m. Friday and remain closed until the event is over.
Attendees should access the event using St. Brides Road, according to the city.
The Route 168 Chesapeake Expressway and Interstate 64 could experience intermittent closures throughout the day Friday, also.
“The more people can plan ahead, the better off everyone will be,” Price said.
Wednesday, bleachers, risers and rows of portable restrooms were being set up in a field on property.
This will be Trump’s first rally following his first 2024 debate with President Joe Biden Thursday night.
