CNU women’s hoops gears up for postseason run, looking for redemption

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (WAVY) – The CNU women’s basketball team is doing exactly what it has done for a long time.

A 23-1 record, 11 straight wins, and undefeated at home, not to mention a Division III-record 40-straight wins on the road. When it comes to March, you want to be as hot as possible, and give yourself the best chance to make a run, but now the Captains are playing this well, with house money on top of it.

Literally, house money.

This year’s Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament will be held at CNU, starting Thursday February 22.

“I think this is the first time in my 11 years here that we’ve had the tournament here,” said head coach Bill Broderick said.

And those 11 years have also been wildly productive. Broderick’s coaching record at CNU sits at 278 wins and only 5 losses.

I’ll say it again.. 278 wins. 11 years.

Wild.

This CNU team is looking to hang a banner though. In a year where the Captains as an athletics department was wildly successful, the women’s hoops squad made it all the way to the D3 National Championship game, where they suffered their only loss of the season to Translyvania University.

The team says they’re not even focused on the NCAA tournament right now, because getting an auto-bid through the conference tournament is what’s top of mind.

The Captains last regular season game is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Warren Wilson.
