VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (WAVY) — When you think of legendary wrestling programs in the 757, you have to think of Cox.

“Once you walk into this room, you’re walking into history,” said junior wrestler Seth Pringle.

And over the weekend, the wrestling team added to that history, winning the first state championship in wrestling by any Beach District school since 2010. Head coach Dalton Head said that’s what makes this one so special. It wasn’t just a one-man effort, or a single title — still wildly impressive.

“That’s what made the difference,” Head said. “We placed a wrestler in seven of the fourteen weight classes on the podium. We had 12 guys pulling weight. The whole team aspect was really special.”

“We’ve all worked hard as a team, we got a chance to show them and we did,” said sophomore Rudy Wagner.

But the most impressive thing about this feat is the fact that the Falcons could arguably get even better from now to next season because so many wrestlers are coming back to compete.

“Well, we had three sophomores make the finals and one junior,” Head said, “so we have all four finalists come back. We don’t plan on going anywhere.”
