NORFOLK (WAVY) — The high school basketball playoffs get underway Friday with region action all over Hampton Roads.
Out of all the regions, 5B appears to be the toughest one on the boys side.
The top seed is 21-1 Woodside, the defending Class 5 state champions. The Wolverines open up against Kecoughtan at 6 p.m. Saturday at Norview High School.
King’s Fork is a newcomer to 5B after moving up from Class 4. The 18-4 Bulldogs open up against Bethel at noon Saturday, also at Norview.
Maury is the third seed in 5B.
The Commodores are riding a four-game winning streak heading into the post season, including a win over Class 3 power Lake Taylor.
Maury won the state title in 2019 and lost in the championship game last season.
Saturday the Commodores open up against Menchville at 4 p.m. Saturday at Norview.
“We know 5B is the gauntlet you’ve gotta go through,” Maury coach Brandon Plummer said. “We know it’s gonna be tough and we know at this time you need a little luck on your side, but my guys have been putting the work in and I feel like they are hungry and they really want it.”
