BRISTOL, Tenn. (WJHL) — As mother nature tries to make up her mind for the Food City 500 weekend, NASCAR wanted to make use of a new wet weather package for short tracks.
NASCAR team cars will be armed this weekend with defoggers (no wipers) and have special sets of wet weather tires that can be used in damp track conditions, ensuring they get back to racing faster, should a shower pop up during the race.
Last month, Goodyear held a closed test session at the Bristol Motor Speedway with Brad Keselowski, Erik Jones, and rookie Zane Smith to see how the rain tires would hold up on the concrete surface.
If that happens, this would be the first time in NASCAR’s history — during a regular-season points race on a short track — that they would use this new technology.
