Former Norfolk State athlete Amber Brown, who inspired NSU community, dies at 28

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Amber Brown, a former player on the Norfolk State women’s basketball team who the NSU community rallied around in 2016, died earlier this week at the age of 28.

NSU did not disclose her cause of death, but acknowledged her past health struggles.

“Brown inspired the Norfolk State community with her courageous battle off the court in 2016, spending over a month in the hospital after complications from a serious health condition,” NSU Athletics wrote.

She returned to NSU later that year and got a standing ovation before the Spartans’ game against Morgan State. She’d go one to receive the school’s N4A Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award in 2017.

“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the untimely passing of Amber Brown.” said NSU women’s basketball head coach Larry Vickers. “Her dedication, resilience, and vibrant spirit left an indelible mark on our Spartan family. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”

NSU says the community can support Brown’s loved ones by donating to a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs. You can donate at this link.
