NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — It’s another day that ends in “Y”, which means Norfolk State’s women’s basketball team dominated yet again, this time in Friday’s MEAC tournament semifinals.

The Spartans cruised to a 72-33 win over Coppin State to punch their ticket to their fourth straight MEAC tournament championship game.

The key contributors to this one were the usual suspects. Diamond Johnson and Kierra Wheeler combined for 39 points and 17 rebounds, but every single Spartan who touched for the floor were net positives in the +/- category.

“We’ve had some really special games,” said Spartans coach Larry Vickers. “As far as defensively, in one half, that was our best defensive effort all year.”

Norfolk State (29-4), has set a program record for wins and will play for win number 30 and their third straight MEAC tournament championship Saturday. It’s getting to the point where they haven’t lost in months, so getting rid of complacency is what this team said will get them over the hump once again.

“[Coach Vickers] talks to me about building the dynasty and culture here,” Wheeler said. “That’s our motivation here.”

“A threepeat is hard at any level,” Johnson said. “We’ve really matured and locked in at every level. We did a great job, but we’re still 0-0 until next game, so we gotta lock in.”

Said Vickers: “We haven’t lost since Christmas break, so we’re going back to 2024. When you get to a point to when you win so many games in a row, … you start to lack appreciation for these moments. Winning the amount of games we’ve won at this point, you start to relax. We can’t do that, especially going into tomorrow.”

The Spartans will tipoff the MEAC championship game at Scope Arena against Howard at 4 p.m. Saturday.
