NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)– Norfolk State University (NSU) kicked off its most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of the institution on Saturday.
The “Now Is Our Time” Campaign kicked off this past weekend during the Battle of the Bay against the Hampton University Pirates with lots of excitement, including a flag bearer, campaign video and an announcement of the fundraising goal.
Officials said the fundraising goal is $90 million.
This is NSU’s second major campaign. The first campaign took place 30 years ago.
Shana James, Assistant Vice President for Development for University Advancement, said they’ve received several checks already, totaling over $8 million. Companies, including Langley Federal Credit Union, Chartway Federal Credit Union and several individuals, contributed to the campaign.
Landmark Foundation is upon the many companies who donated to the campaign, gifting the university $5 million.
James says the money from the campaign will be used for several different university initiatives, including scholarships, academic programs, athletic programs and the everyday needs of the university.
“It’s so important that, number one, we support our students through scholarships,” James said. “We don’t want our students to leave here with debt and so anything we can do to increase the scholarship pool is our number one focus.”
