LAS VEGAS — Jim Reding noticed something.
Guests of the hotels, resorts, and casinos that the company he worked for loved the scents throughout the halls and lobbies. Each was specially created to match what the customer wanted, but when those guests asked how they could get the scent for their homes, they were told it wasn’t available for them to buy.
When Jim told his wife Christina, she suggested she could make scented candles using his scents. And so, in 2017 she launched Aroma Retail on her kitchen table.
“I can’t talk about how many pots and pans I ruined making candles,” she laughs. “That’s a sore subject.”
But not the company’s success. Seven years later it now employs 27 and has expanded to a 13,000 square feet building not far from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Oh, and one of her employees: her husband Jim. She hired him to be her CEO and chief scent creator.
And create scents is what he loves best. Including a special “Big Game Super Scent”. Aroma Retail already provides indoor scent services to the Green Bay Packers, and hopes to add more teams. But since it’s not an official NFL sponsor, for now it will have to remain “Super Scent.”
With the help of an online poll, Jim went to work. And in the end created a scent that includes about 18 different scents brought together to provide a big game feel.
“You are going to think that you are at a championship game where people are popping champagne,” Jim told FOX4’s John Holt.
“You’re also going to think your next to a big lawn that a bunch of people ran over and churned up a little bit of dirt and grass.”
And like other scents produced for commercial businesses, each one designed to provide an ongoing sensation.
“A top note where you’re going to get the scent right away. Then to mid notes, and eventually you sense the base notes after about 10-15 minutes.” chief marketing officer Mike Hewitt described. “That’s the scent that lingers.”
The “Super Scent” launched this week in Las Vegas and online. But Aroma Retail’s launch seven years ago continues to take off.
“I thought it was gonna be something fun, extra going out money,” says found Christina Reding. “And then it exploded.”
Eventually the company hopes to provide scenting services to more NFL teams. But at the same time, with 27 employees and additional space on the way, take care of regular customers. Those who couldn’t find the scents they loved when they were on vacation.
“If you’re at one of the properties and it’s the greatest vacation ever, you can bring that smell home with you and remember it every day,” Hewitt said.
