NORFOLK (WAVY) — A lot has changed for Orioles prospect Jackson Holliday since last season. For one, the 20-year-old married his long time girlfriend.

Another change is his position, as he’s been moved from shortstop to second base.

And yet another change is that he’s starting the season in Triple-A with the Tides after beginning last year in Single-A.

During spring training, Holliday batted .311 with three doubles, two triples, two HR’s and six RBI in 48 plate appearances.

Holliday is not just a top prospect, he’s literally the top prospect in all of baseball.

He was asked Thursday if he was surprised that he’s starting the season in the minor leagues.

“Surprised? Not really,” Holliday said. “I had a lot of questions about that in spring training, either make the team as a 20-year-old or go to Triple-A as a 20-year-old, so it’s a win-win situation.”

Holliday admits that he needs to continue to improve his hitting against left-handed pitching while adapting to the switch from shortstop to second base.

Holliday was called up to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie last September. If he continues his progression, expect the young and talented Holliday to be up in Baltimore sooner rather than later.

The Tides open the season Friday at Harbor Park against the Durham Bulls. Chayce McDermott is the opening day starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
