SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — Bigger is better. Sometimes. At least bigger can be better when targeting trophy-sized largemouth bass.
That is the thinking behind the new Missile Baits Monster Jig. John Crews, Bassmaster Elite Series champion angler, is the owner of Salem-based Missile.
“This is the one ounce, there’s a one and half ounce, too,” said Crews as he held up the jig with a 7 and a half inch craw trailer attached. “It has a ten-aught hook, huge skirt, it is monstrous.”
Going big can make sense for trophy bass. Because of their size, big bass are often on the hunt for a big calorie payoff with minimal exertion. Putting a big bait in front of them can, at times, be more effective than smaller baits for triggering a strike.
Crews plans to have a monster jig set up as part of his repertoire when the Bassmaster Elite Series season opens at Toledo Bend on the Texas-Louisiana border in late February.
“You want to get out there and get the biggest bite,” said Crews. “I’m going to have one of these things tied on, and sure enough, hopefully everything is bigger in Texas, including the jigs and including the bass in my livewell.”
