NORFOLK, Va, (WAVY) — Police say a teenager driving a stolen SUV Thursday morning caused a crash that seriously injured the other driver.
The crash happened around 7:15 a.m. at Tidewater Drive and Willow Wood Drive in the Lakewood area of Norfolk.
Officers spotted and tried to catch up to a Chevrolet Equinox driving erratically on Tidewater Drive near Guy Street. The Equinox ran a red light and crashed into a Ford Ranger.
The driver of the Ford was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police took the 17-year-old driver of the Equinox into custody at the scene and will be seeking petitions against him for possession of a stolen vehicle, driving without a license and eluding.
The vehicle he was driving was reported stolen from Virginia Beach.
Tidewater Drive was closed in all directions between Cromwell Road and Norview Avenue while crews worked to clear the accident. The road reopened at 2:30 p.m.
