Downtown Tunnel reopens after tractor-trailer gets stuck

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A tractor-trailer crash closed all westbound lanes at the Downtown Tunnel for several hours on Monday.

The crash was reported at 10:38 a.m. and the tunnel reopened just before 3:30 p.m.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya with Virginia State Police said there were no injuries reported, only property damage.

Footage from inside the tunnel taken right after the crash showed debris scattered throughout both westbound lanes.

An investigation revealed the driver of the tractor-trailer ignored the over-height warning signs, and the vehicle became stuck inside the tunnel, police said. The driver was charged with an over-height violation.

A detour was in place, with westbound I-264 drivers being diverted to southbound Interstate 464.
