VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Downed power lines caused a vehicle crash and lane closures Monday on Interstate 64 in Virginia Beach.

According to Virginia State Police, Dominion power lines snapped and dropped on the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64 near Indian River Rd. around 11 a.m. into traffic. The incident caused a two-vehicle crash. Police say there were no injuries reported as a result of the crash.

Dominion Energy is investigating what caused the power lines to come down. A representative confirmed to WAVY that the incident also knocked out power to 1,100 customers.

Dominion crews responded to the scene on the interstate to remove the wires and make temporary repairs. Power was restored around noon Monday.

Chopper 10 flew over the scene Monday:

VDOT cameras showed vehicles being rerouted onto the eastbound lanes. State police confirmed traffic was diverted in both directions in the vicinity of the incident. According to a tweet from Chesapeake Roads, state police were diverting all traffic on I-64 to Greenbrier Pkwy due to the crash.

VSP says all lanes on I-64 at Indian River Road were reopened around 1:35 p.m.

Dominion is working with VDOT to return to the scene to permanently repair the broken poles.

WAVY viewer Kenny Warnsing was about to get on I-64 Monday morning when his dashcam captured video of what appears to be power lines sparking at the location of the downed lines. He shared this video with WAVY TV.
