VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It’s become an American pastime to take to the road when the weather warms up, but how can you ensure you’re not losing money while behind the wheel?
Gas prices are mirroring levels they did the year prior, according to AAA.
During the spring and summer, prices tend to rise partly due to more people on the road and the summer blend the EPA requires.
But there are still ways to get more miles to the gallon or an electric charge.

One of the number one energy drains on a car can be tires that are not inflated properly. No matter the fuel, Holly Dalby, a spokesperson from AAA Tidewater said following your tires’ recommend PSI is a must.
Following the speed limit can also save you money, according to Dalby. The faster you go, the more fuel you burn.
Finally, keep up on your car maintenance and keep in mind what you have riding in the trunk or back seat.
Driving around with a set of golf clubs and workout weights might not seem like much, but it adds up.
“All that extra weight is going to be a drag on your fuel economy. So don’t keep your trunks like a storage locker or the back of your SUV,” Dalby said. “Keep in there what you have to have, not everything that you do have in those vehicles, because that adds up in extra weight is less fuel economy.”
