NORFOLK (WAVY) – With about 40 new players on the roster, the Old Dominion football team was back on the practice field for the first time this year as the Monarchs opened up their first batch of spring work outs.
Quarterback Grant Wilson took the first team reps. In his first season last year Wilson completed 57 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,149 yards, 17 touchdowns and 8 interceptions as he looks forward to year two.
“I look to build chemistry with the wide receivers, build timing, build trust,” Wilson said. “Then just clean up the little things that we needed to work on at the end of last season and just getting them right.”
ODU played in 11 one-score games last season, the most in FBS.
The Monarchs finished the season 6-7 and the season finale was a 38-35 overtime loss in a bowl game to Western Kentucky, a game in which ODU let a 28-0 lead slip away.
“I wanted to win that game as much or more than anybody,” coach Ricky Rahne said. “We need to finish better overall in games. It wasn’t just that one, there’s some other games we need to finish better so that’s been one of our focuses.”
ODU will hold it’s annual spring game on Saturday April 13th.
