VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — There has been a lot of debate about what the City of Virginia Beach should do with the building where a mass shooting happened in May.
The city recently asked employees to take part in a survey to get a better idea from the community about an appropriate way to utilize Building 2 at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center.
Results of that survey released online show 44% of people who responded say the building should be torn down. Half said building 2 should be renamed.
Another 31% said they believe the building should be the new headquarters for the Virginia Beach Police Department.
About 28% of the survey’s respondents selected the option to “renovate it and relocated other City departments into it (not Police).”
According the survey, the majority of people think natural elements like landscaping and water are absolutely essential to the memorial.
Another question asked in the survey: should we continue to keep a site for a temporary memorial?
47% say it should be kept, while 24% said it should not be kept.
Meanwhile, 62% of those who took the survey say they support relocating the temporary memorial to the parking lot across the street from where it stood.
So, who is responding to the survey? According to the results, 57% of people who answered the questions work for the city.
