WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Joe Biden is trying to tamp down calls for him to step aside as the Democratic nominee.

One of the nation’s largest labor unions told him to stay in the race.

Wednesday, Biden was greeted with cheers from members of the AFL-CIO.

“You always had our back, so we have yours,” said AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler.

It’s a far cry from what the president is hearing from members of his own party. He praised union leaders for their work.

“The middle class built this country. You built the middle class,” Biden said.

President Biden also used the moment to call out former President Donald Trump’s economic policies.

“His proposals are going to bankrupt the country. His proposals are going to cause a recession. His proposal is going to cause us higher interest rates,” Biden said.

West Virginia Republican Senator Shelley Moore Capito says President Biden’s policies are hurting the middle class.

“Families have lost over $25,000 over these last three years of buying power,” said Moore Capito.

Trump held a rally in Florida Tuesday night, where he shared his own plans for the economy.

“I will not cut one penny from Social Security and Medicare, and I will not raise the retirement age by one day,” Trump said.

The former president also challenged President Biden to re-do the debate.

“Let’s do another debate this week so that sleepy Joe Biden can prove to everyone all over the world that he has what it takes to be president,” Trump said.

Both have more campaign events planned for later this week.
