WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Frustrated over border enforcement, Republicans held their second hearing to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Republican Congressman Mark Green of Tennessee asked, “Do you think Secretary Mayorkas has done an adequate job of vetting illegal aliens coming across our southern border?”
One mother, Tammy Nobles, says the federal government’s failure allowed an MS-13 gang member to murder her daughter.
“Kayla fought for her life that day and she lost to an individual who wasn’t even supposed to be in the country,” she testified.
Mayorkas has yet to testify before the committee but speaking at the U.S. Conference of Mayor’s annual meeting Thursday said Congress must act to fix a broken immigration system “that has needed legislative repair for decades.”
A path forward on a bipartisan deal remains unclear because U.S. border security is being tied to funding for Ukraine.
Following a meeting with the president Wednesday, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson warned House Republicans will not send any money abroad until more aggressive immigration policies are included.
“The legislation has to solve the problem,” Johnson said.
Thursday, Colorado Democrats, including Denver’s mayor, Mike Johnston, said they need resources to take on an influx of migrants.
“Facing a humanitarian crisis and a fiscal crisis unlike anything we’ve seen in the last 25 years” he said.
Despite protests from House Republicans, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell says he’s ready to vote on a deal with Democrats as early as next week.
