WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Election Day is 99 days away, and the presidential race looks a lot different than it did just over a week ago.
“The dynamics have shifted dramatically,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said.
Both Democrats and Republicans are drawing a contrast between the candidates, with Vice President Kamala Harris in the spotlight.
“She’s a radical left lunatic,” former President Donald Trump said about Harris.
Meanwhile, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Harris is “a highly skilled, charismatic, very intelligent prosecutor.”
With Harris expected at the top of the ticket, Jeffries says his party is reenergized.
“We’ve seen the surge of activism, volunteerism, and certainly grassroots financial support,” Jeffries said.
The Harris campaign said it raised $200 million in the week since President Biden dropped out.
Meanwhile, Republican nominee Donald Trump and VP pick Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) are focusing on Harris’ handling of the southern border.
“Kamala Harris is directly responsible for the worst border crisis in this nation’s history,” Vance said.
But Harris is focusing on abortion, talking today about Iowa’s latest six-week abortion ban.
“When I am President of the United States, I will sign into law the protections for reproductive freedom,” Harris said in a campaign video.
George Washington University Legislative Affairs Program Director Casey Burgat says those issues, the border and abortion, will continue through November.
“Not only because their supporters agree with them, but it paints a very, very different picture about the other side,” Burgat said.
While voters head to the polls in 99 days, there’s still a lot that can happen.
“That’s the fun part, is that there’s always, always, always an October surprise,” Burgat said.
Democrats are expected to formally vote to nominate Harris and her running mate by Aug. 7.
