WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – South Carolina’s Republican primary is less than a week away.

The state’s former governor Nikki Haley is hoping for an upset win despite polls showing her down by double digits to GOP front-runner former president Donald Trump.

Haley is sharpening her attacks on Trump as the race gets closer, but the former president still has an advantage over her in her home state.

“I promise you this. On Sunday, I’m headed to Michigan and then we’re going to the Super Tuesday states and we’re going to keep on going. So, you get out and vote,” Haley said.

At a rally in South Carolina Monday night, she fired back at him for making fun of her husband who is currently deployed.

“The truth is, Donald Trump has never been near a uniform. He’s never laid on the ground. The closest he’s come to harm’s way is a golf ball hitting him on the golf course, and that’s the truth,” she said.

At a campaign event in Michigan Trump touted his commanding lead over Haley in the latest polls but a win in South Carolina on Saturday would give Trump his fourth victory in a row.

Trump says he’s focused on the general election match-up with President Biden.

“We’re leading Biden by so much. We’re beating him by so much,” he added.

President Biden is headed to California Tuesday for several campaign events and fundraisers.
