WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Republican House Leadership spoke at a news conference today to affirm that they will introduce articles of impeachment for Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.

“The first and most important job of the federal government is to protect its citizens,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said. The GOP warns of crime brought in by border crossings despite crime rates decreasing at historic rates in 2023.

“Today, the House Homeland Security Committee is going to mark up articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas for willfully and systematically refusing to comply with the law and for breaching Americans’ trust,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said.

The only Cabinet member to ever be impeached was Secretary of War William W. Belknap in 1876. However, he was not convicted for receiving money in return for appointments.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) echoed Johnson and Emmer, calling the impeachment “long overdue.”
