WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — The leading third-party candidate in the 2024 presidential race, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., announced he’s suspending his campaign on Friday.
“I want everyone to know that I am not terminating my campaign. I am simply suspending it,” Kennedy said.
He said his name will remain on the ballot in most states.
“In about ten battleground states, where my presence would be a spoiler, I’m gonna remove my name,” he said.
Kennedy, angry with the Democratic party, threw his support behind former President Donald Trump.
“I want to thank Bobby, that was very nice,” Trump said on Friday. “That’s big. He’s a great guy, respected by everybody.”
RFK Jr.’s exit sets up a two-candidate race with 74 days until the election.
Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the Democratic party’s nomination at the DNC in Chicago on Thursday night.
During her speech, Trump attacked Harris on his Truth Social platform posting, “All talk, no action.”
For a portion of Harris’s speech on Thursday night, she addressed the former president.
“But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious,” Harris said.
