WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Questions are swirling in Washington after a gunman camped outside former president Donald Trump’s Florida golf course in what the FBI describes as an assassination plot.

This is the second assassination attempt against the former president in two months, and a growing number of lawmakers appear open to beefing up security around Trump as Election Day draws near.

New body camera footage shows the moment law enforcement arrested the man accused of plotting to kill the former president Sunday.

58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh faced federal gun charges in court Monday morning.

Secret Service spotted Routh armed with an assault rifle roughly 400 yards away from where the former president was playing golf in Florida.

President Joe Biden is encouraging Congress to beef up Secret Service security around Trump.

“They need more help,” said Biden.

He and Vice President Kamala Harris are condemning political violence.

“It solves nothing,” said Biden.

Trump however is blaming them for the attack.  In a tweet, he says their rhetoric and lies have, “taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust.”

According to online posts, the suspect wrote he once voted for Trump.  He later went on to describe Trump as a fool following January 6th and for leaving the Iran deal.

“The rhetoric has to stop,” said Rep. Laurel Lee (R-Fla.).

With Election Day just nine weeks away, Republicans say Trump needs the same security as a sitting president.

“President Trump is probably one of the most controversial people in the world for crying out loud. He should deserve all the protection he can get,” said Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas.).

Lawmakers leading an investigation into July’s assassination attempt against Trump are requesting a briefing with Secret Service this week.  House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) says the House will demand Trump has more security.
