WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Former President Donald Trump is officially the Republican nominee for president.

He accepted the nomination at the Republican National Convention Thursday night and made his first speech since Saturday’s assassination attempt.

“I proudly accept your nomination for president of the United States,” Trump said.

The former president said he rewrote his speech after Saturday’s attack with a focus on unifying the country.

“Just a few short days ago my journey with you nearly ended,” Trump said.

He also paid tribute to the firefighter, Corey Comperatore, who was killed that day.

Trump said he aims to bring the country together.

“I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America,” he said. “We will not let countries come in, take our jobs and plunder our nation.”

He also spent much of his speech attacking his opponent, President Joe Biden.

“The damage that he’s done to this country is unthinkable,” Trump said.

In response to Trump’s speech, the Biden campaign says the president is “more determined than ever” to win in November, warning that Trump has an “extreme” vision for the country.

The Democratic National Convention is one month away with a vote on the nominee set for before then.

It comes as many Democrats call on President Biden to drop out of the race.
