WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Following the shooting at former president Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday, President Joe Biden is calling for the country to come together and lower the political rhetoric.

The RNC says the convention will go on as scheduled but security will be tightened.

One day after an attempted assassination, former President Trump will spend Sunday night in Milwaukee, and says he’s looking forward to the opening, on schedule, of the Republican National Convention.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform, “It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

“An assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation. Everything,” said President Biden.

President Biden says he spoke with Trump after the shooting.

“We had a short but good conversation,” Biden said.

As safety concerns grow, President Biden says he directed the Secret Service, “To review all security measures, for all security measures, for the Republican National Convention.”

The Secret Service says it’s confident it can keep Trump safe inside the convention.

“We are fully prepared and have a comprehensive security plan in place and we’re ready to go,” said Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, Secret Service RNC Coordinator.

Both Democrats and Republicans are sending well wishes to the former president.
