WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The Biden and Trump campaigns are gearing up for their first presidential debate in four years.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates is not organizing the event for the first time in three decades.

Both President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump have agreed to a new debate format. The 90 minute televised debate will not include a live audience and microphones will be cut to avoid interruptions.

TJ Ducklo, senior advisor to the Biden campaign, says the president welcomes the new format.

“The president is really looking forward to having a discussion about the issues that really matter to people at home,” said Ducklo.

Ducklo says the president plans to draw a contrast between himself and Trump on issues including the future of Medicare and social security, reproductive rights and foreign policy.

“When you’re talking about these serious issues on the world stage he couldn’t be more opposite than Donald Trump.”

Ducklo says the debate will likely highlight differences between President Biden and Trump’s stance about the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel.

The debate will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, where Black voters, who’ve been critical of the president’s handling of the war in Gaza, could swing the election.

The Trump campaign, which is keeping their debate prep under wraps, is also hoping to make a dent with Black voters Thursday by hitting Biden hard over the inflation.

“Whether you’re black, white or brown in this country, everyone’s money is green,” said Trump campaign spokesperson Caroline Sunshine.

Trump campaign spokesperson Caroline Sunshine says, unlike President Biden, Trump does not need to prepare.

Sunshine also refused to reveal Trump’s strategy in the debate.

“Super Bowl winning teams don’t reveal their playbooks, so I won’t either,” said Sunshine.

The Trump campaign says Trump plans to rail against President Biden’s record on immigration and the economy.

Trump himself is ramping up attacks on President Biden’s age and performance.  At a rally over the weekend, he accused President Biden of taking drugs to prepare for the debate. On Truth Social Monday, Trump demanded both candidates take drug tests before taking the stage.

“It’s obviously ridiculous and not new,” said Ducklo. “The reason is simple he doesn’t want to have stand on that debate stage and talk about his deeply unpopular record”

Asked if Trump is concerned President Biden could have a more lively performance Sunshine says no.

“Joe Biden’s record is the same no matter what version of Joe Biden shows up that debate stage on Thursday,” says Sunshine.

Thursday’s debate is one of two before voters weigh in on November 5th.
