Yesterday a big area of low pressure did bring us some gusty winds along the coast, and we had a wide area of rain in the region. We picked up about a quarter to a half an inch of rain with 1-1.5 inches between Elizabeth City and the Outer Banks.

Now the coastal storm has moved up into the Northeast states.

Regional Weather Map

High pressure is building in from the west, and we have clearing skies this morning. We’ll have some nice weather today. We’ll be mostly sunny for the bulk of the day. High temps will be in the upper 60s with a few 70s inland. Winds will be out of the west at 8 mph to 12 mph. There are actually some decent waves at the oceanfront.

Experienced surfers only…water temps are only in the low 50s and there is likely a high threat for rip currrents.

We’ll have nice weather tomorrow. We’ll have lots of sunshine through the day. However, we will have an onshore breeze (easterly). This will stop us from heating up too much. Highs will be back in the 60s.  However, it might be in the low-mid 60s near the shore with some 70s inland.

On Friday, we’ll have more clouds and a few scattered showers late in the day. High temps will be near 70.  Then we’ll be in the low-mid 70s over the weekend. We’ll have a mix of sun and clouds both days. There may be an isolated shower on either day. We’ll really warm up by next Monday. High temps are aiming for 80 degrees. I think the cold air is finally behind us. Stay tuned.

In world news…I found an article this morning that talks about one big effect that hurricanes have on the environment: Forest damage. Hurricane Maria damaged many homes, but it also dropped trees at twice the rate of previous storms. This is impacting the ecosystem there. The types of trees that grow back may change. There are other forest locations also impacted by recent hurricanes. Here is the article with more information: Forest damage from hurricnaes.
