Yesterday was one of the wildest temperature swings I have ever seen. I’ve seen even bigger drops and rises in temperature before, but not multiple rises and drop like they did in Norfolk. Take a look. These were the temperatures at Norfolk International Airport:
A back-door cold front meandered near the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay through the day. The temperatures in Norfolk Oscillated like crazy. The eastern Shore dropped to the 50s and 40s and stayed there for a while. Meanwhile, inland and southern locations asked…”What temperature drop?”. It was warm there all day. Elizabeith City broke a record with a high of 78 degrees. The old high was 71 (2017).
This morning the front has lifted north a little bit, but it wasn’t moving too much.
Today we’ll have a stronger breeze picking up out of the west/southwest. That should drive the front north through the midday hours. We’ll probably warm up to the low 70s in Hampton Roads with mid 70s inland/south. It will be cooler on the Eastern Shore and Northern Neck. A bigger cold front will move in from the west around midday or the early afternoon. The winds will change form southwesterly to northwestlerly. Temperatuers will steadily drop to the 60s. Then we’ll drop to the 50s by the evening. We’ll have a big band of clouds come in with the front. There may be some spotty showers or sprinkles, but there shouldn’t be much. We’ll clear out tonight as the front drops to our south. Temps will fall down to the low-mid 30s by tomorrow morning. Then tomorrow we’ll only top off near 40 degrees. We’ll have partly cloudy skies. Sunday will also be pretty cold. Lows will be in the 20s in the morning. This will affect some of the budding plants that have developed in the recent warm weather. Then we’ll have highs in the 40s during the afternoon.
We’ll still be cool on Monday with highs in the 40s, but rain showers will move in. We’ll have scattered showers on and off through the day. Temps will jump on Tuesday into the low 60s. We’ll have a lot of rain showers with the warmer air. We’ll still be warm on Wedneday with a few showers in the morning. Highs will be in the 60s. We should dry out through the day. Stay tuned for updates.
