GALLERY: Virginia Beach tornado damage | April 30

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – An EF-3 tornado touched down Sunday night in the northeast part of Virginia Beach, leaving behind lots of damage but fortunately no reported injuries.

On Monday morning, the National Weather Service Wakefield confirmed the EF-3, the first one ever for the city. That’s considered a “strong” tornado with winds between 136-165 mph, just two notches below the strongest tornadoes, the EF-5 with winds above 200 mph.

The EF-3 tornado in VA Beach is the first tornado of that strength to hit the city on record. The last EF-3 to occur in Eastern VA were the Suffolk Tornado in 2008 and the James City/Gloucester tornado in 2011.

“We have confirmed an EF-3 tornado occurred in the Great Neck portion of the city of Virginia Beach yesterday evening. The storm survey is still ongoing and additional details will be released later today.”

Chopper 10 captured the damage from the Virginia Beach tornado on Monday morning.
