ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WNCT/WAVY) — Residents in Elizabeth City are stocking up on emergency supplies as Hurricane Dorian is moving up the East Coast.
Officials in Pasquotank-Camden-Elizabeth City on Wednesday joined multiple localities in the viewing area that declared states of emergency Wednesday.
Meanwhile, area residents took the opportunity to stock up on sand at the Elizabeth City Public Works Department Wednesday morning. The sand was free, but residents had to bring their own bags and shovels.
WAVY’s Kayla Gaskins reports Rose’s and Lowe’s ran out sand bags, so some residents got creative and used pillow cases.
Closures and cancellations have also been announced for area schools.
Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools said all their schools and offices will be closed to students and teachers on Thursday, Sept. 5, and Friday, Sept. 6, due to the hurricane.
Additionally, all after school activities for Wednesday, Sept. 4 are canceled.
The After School Care Program will be open on Wednesday for elementary students who are registered, but parents should pick children up as early as possible, school officials said.
The ECPPS Board of Education meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 5, is also cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later time.
Elizabeth City State University cancelled classes for Wednesday, but all university-related activities are expected to go on as scheduled.
Classes at the university are expected to resume Monday, Sept. 9, at 8 a.m.
The city also postponed Friday’s regular recycling and trash pickup. Sanitation service is expected to resume Monday and will include the postponed waste collection.
Emergency management officials said in a Facebook post yard clippings, debris and tree trimmings are being collected citywide in advance of the storm.
