NORTH CAROLINA (WAVY) – A coastal flood advisory remained in effect for Dare County until Wednesday at 1 a.m. and there was a high surf advisory until 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Officials said Hatteras Island could possibly receive one to two feet of flooding in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Shallow flooding was expected on some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes near the waterfront.
Officials advised motorist to plan for extra travel time due to road closures, and as always residents should take the necessary steps to protect flood prone property.
On Tuesday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced that parts of NC12 were closed between the ferry terminal and the pony pens due to flooding conditions.
Soundside flooding has made parts of NC12 unpassable for motorists on the north end of Ocracoke Island.
In anticipation of the inclement weather, Dare County Schools had a virtual learning day for students Tuesday.
Flooding has also been reported in locations like the Tri-Villages and between the Rodanthe bridge and Etheridge Bridge on Pea Island.
Ferry service was temporarily suspended between Hatteras and Ocracoke due to the weather conditions.
The soundside flooding receded by Wednesday morning’s high tide, but NC 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island remained closed Wednesday. NCDOT anticipated it would reopen around 2 p.m., but said there would still be water and sand on the road and warned drivers to slow down when approaching the area.
In Kitty Hawk, the police department said a section of Moore Shore Road was closed Tuesday morning because of flooding, and posted this picture.
Motorists are urged to use extreme caution if you come across standing water.
