(WGHP) — Looks like our February will come to an end without any major winter weather events, but February 2015 was a different story.
That month produced several winter events.
The first one happened during the middle of the month; a low-pressure system, traveling across the Gulf Coast States, ran into a high-pressure system that was pushing cold air down the East Coast and the result was a messy February 16 and 17.
It was cold enough for snow across the FOX8 viewing area. Of course, it’s tough for the Piedmont to get a purely snow system. Warmer air aloft started moving in, changing our snow into sleet and freezing rain. Only the mountains and foothills remained cold enough for an all-snow event.
If that wasn’t enough, we even had a little bit of snow on the 18th.
About a week later, the next weather maker arrived. Once again, another low-pressure system moving across the Gulf Coast States, ran into cold, dry air over the Piedmont. This time, the Piedmont remained cold enough for mostly a heavy, wet late February snow.
Due to the weight of the wet snow, trees and powerlines snapped. According to the North Carolina Climate Office, there were over 190,000 power outages from the Triad to the Triangle.
Thankfully, the last day of February 2015 was a cold, but dry day.
