HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — The dynamic system to our west will approach the region today, and scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected. There was a tornado watch for much of the Hampton Roads area, and a tornado warning for Surry County.
Some thunderstorms may kick off by late morning/midday and continue into the afternoon. These first areas of rain should be just mainly rain, but some gusty winds could occur.
This afternoon, the higher threat for severe weather develops IF we have enough instability. Most models guidance does show enough instability for some stronger storms. There is also a lot of wind energy aloft so it won’t take much for there to be some stronger wind gusts.
The primary concern will be those gusty winds, but there will be a risk for some hail or even an isolated tornado. Be sure to stay weather aware this afternoon. Download our WAVY Weather app to get push alert notifications.
The latest update from the SPC as of 9am shows a level 2 threat across much of the region. Wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are the main concern at a level 2.
Even outside of the storms, it will be a little breezy this afternoon with some gusts to 30.
Cooler air behind the front comes crashing in and temperatures fall to the 50s to near 60 for the back half of the week. Winds will remain breezy on Thursday, with gusts up to 30 mph possible. I can’t rule out an isolated shower Thursday afternoon as the upper level low moves east across our region.
It’ll remain cool (but bright) with sunshine through the weekend. The weather also looks good for viewing of the solar eclipse on Monday! Remember, we’ll see a partial solar eclipse here which means you’ll need eclipse glasses at all times to view it.
