PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – After celebrating 40 years on the air with WAVY News 10, Don Slater is preparing for retirement. He’ll spend the next year at WAVY-TV 10 and WVBT FOX43 under the new title of Chief Meteorologist Emeritus. It’s a title used to convey exceptional service, both in length of time and overall quality, and Don Slater certainly deserves respect for both.

WAVY-TV 10 News Director Sarah Zak said, “Weather forecasting isn’t just important, it’s
potentially lifesaving for people in the community. That’s Don Slater’s legacy for 40 years at
WAVY.”

Don Slater will continue to bring his expert forecasts to viewers in Hampton Roads and Northeast North Carolina five days a week, handling weather weeknights on WAVY News 10 at 4 and 5, plus WAVY News 10 at 6:30 on FOX43.

In conjunction with this change, Jeff Edmondson is now promoted to the position of Chief Meteorologist. Having previously worked at WAVY-TV 10 from 2012 to 2015, Jeff returned in early 2019 and will use his experience in the market to take on the lead role in the weather department. Jeff will handle weather weeknights on WAVY News 10 at 5:30, 6, and 11, as well as WAVY News 10 at 10 on FOX43.

“Working directly with Don Slater for several years has been a highlight of my career. Having the
chance to continue his work as the Chief Meteorologist is an honor,” said Jeff Edmondson. “I look
forward to working with the rest of the weather team to keep everyone in our area informed of
the sunny and stormy days ahead.”

Jeff is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society (AMS). His
career started at KBJR in Duluth, Minnesota, and he also worked at KARE 11 in Minneapolis,
Minnesota.

“Both Don and Jeff live and breathe weather. Don is a proven best-in-class meteorologist with an
unmatched depth of knowledge, and we are thrilled to have Don continue to be part of the Super
Doppler 10 Weather Team,” said WAVY-TV 10 and WVBT FOX43 Vice President and General
Manager Carol Ward. “Jeff is a proven leader in weather coverage and under his direction,
Hampton Roads can continue to look to WAVY-TV 10 as the leader in local weather coverage for
years to come.”

As Chief Meteorologist, Jeff Edmondson will handle weather forecasting for WAVY News 10 weeknights at
5:30, 6, and 11, as well as WAVY News 10 at 10 p.m. on FOX43.
