NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A man fell into the water below the Willoughby Bay Bridge in Norfolk Wednesday afternoon and had to be rescued, WAVY confirmed.
The Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP) employee was working to secure construction material on the Willoughby Bay Bridge along I-64 from high winds, when he slipped and fell into the water, according to a spokesperson with HRCP.
The incident happened just after 4 p.m. as storms moved through our region.
Other HRCP employees were able to quickly rescue their colleague, who the company said was wearing a life jacket.
According to HRCP, he was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to be evaluated, but is expected to be alright. The Norfolk Fire Department told WAVY the man did not have serious injuries.
A WAVY viewer pulled over and shot video of the man in the water, clinging to a bridge support. The video also shows the rescue. She shared the video with us.
HRCP said it is investigating the cause.
